For the first time ever, iPhone was out for sales in China. Expectations were high among Apple and many iPhone lovers watched the China market with keen interest. China Unicom which partnered with Apple to provide iPhone services pledged that about 1 million iPhones would be sold in a year. This further increased the tension when iPhone was introduced in China in the last week.

However, iPhone was not welcomed in China as in the case of US. Only 5000 customers in the whole of China have purchased the handset so far. Even though China Unicom is keeping high hopes, Apple is keeping its fingers crossed. When iPhone was introduced in India in 2008, it didn’t receive the most coveted welcome as expected. At the end of one year, only 20,000 iPhones were sold in India. Apple doesn’t want the same to happen in China, but there are a few good pointers that Apple has to concentrate at the moment.

The cost of iPhone in China is around $730 and the monthly subscriber fees and other fees will result in a pricey phone. The average income of urban workers in China is less than $4300. Apple has to find a way to cut down the cost of iPhone in China to increase its sales.

There is so much competition for iPhone in the Chinese market. Nokia is the leading mobile phone brand used by most of the people in China. The mobile phone black market flourishes in China where people can easily buy multiple mobile phones for the cost of single iPhone.
